The ‘orphan’ disease

The need is to institute a programme for animal birth control and for the vaccination of domestic, community and stray dogs, which is the only proven method of animal rabies control. Under the law, it is mandatory for pet owners to get their animals vaccinated but as is common here there is no enforcement of the law. Ad hoc immunisation of a limited number of dogs, and culling are unsustainable over a period of time and a waste of resources.

Wildlife department destroys turtle parts

Dried Turtle PartsPESHAWAR, Aug 27: The NWFP Wildlife department on Monday destroyed parts of dead turtles recovered from a hut near the Shah Alam River on the Charsadda Road. An official of the wildlife department said that a week ago some species of turtles were declared ‘endangered species’ by the government and trade and possession of turtles was made illegal.

Ministry certifies turtle parts as ‘dry fish skin’

KARACHI, Aug 18: A huge consignment of body parts of highly rare freshwater turtles, which was caught at the Karachi airport a few weeks ago, had been certified by the federal ministry of food, agriculture and livestock (Minfal) as dry fish skin, it has been reliably learnt.

According to sources, the export of turtle parts is banned under the country’s laws as the turtles have been declared endangered species under international conservation laws, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Another zoo tiger dies

IT is tragic that a Bengal tiger that was brought to the Lahore zoo from the Safari Park for breeding purposes died on Friday, presumably from a fatal parasitic disease. The tiger is the fifth to have died in the last year and a half, which makes it imperative for the authorities to take urgent remedial measures. If the post-mortem reveals that the latest death was also caused by the parasitic disease responsible for the other deaths, steps must immediately be taken to safeguard the remaining tigers.

Nazim orders campaign against stray dogs

LAHORE: Expressing dissatisfaction on the campaign against stray dogs, the district nazim Mian Amer Mahmood directed the epidemic control officer to gear up efforts in this respect. He told officials to ensure the provision of the material required for killing dogs and directed to the solid waste management officials to dispose off the killed dogs at once.

Army-run gas firm violates wildlife, environment laws

KARACHI, June 16: The Mari Gas Company Limited (MGCL), owned by the army-operated Fauji Foundation, has been accused of conducting exploratory activities in protected wildlife areas, Dawn has learnt.

The Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) and the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) claim that the mandatory permission and no-objection certificates have not been obtained from them.

The Monday, June 11 2007, edition of Pakistan’s leading English daily newspaper DAWN has news of the Liaquatabad Town Administration killing 167 dogs in their jurisdiction in Karachi. According to the news item, the sanitation department is encouraging residents to inform them about stray dogs in their area so that they can come to eliminate them. Liaquatabad bird bazaar banned

KARACHI, June 6: A weekly bird bazaar, which is being held for the past many years near the Sindh Government Hospital, has been banned by the Liaquatabad town administration keeping in view the hardship caused to the residents, commuters and patients.

The bazaar was held every Sunday under the Liaquatabad flyover, where birds, animals and fish were sold, including rare birds, the buying or selling of which is illegal. All sorts of birds, locked up in steel cages, were placed on the pavement to attract buyers. These included flocks of ducks, chickens, parrots, pigeons, sand grouse and partridges.

Zoo director says no one ready to adopt Suzi.

LAHORE: The Lahore Zoo authorities on Saturday urged philanthropists and educational institutions to adopt Suzi, the only elephant at the zoo. The zoo officials said the zoo was running an Adaptation Scheme to encourage people to adopt and feed animals. Under this scheme, they said, as many as 18 animals had been adopted from 2001 to 2005.
